Guidelines cut red tape and boost safety of food events

5 Aug 2006

A set of new guidelines to improve the safety of temporary food events and reduce red tape was today launched by the NSW Food Authority, Primary Industries Minister Ian Macdonald said today.

“The guide; “Food Handling Guidelines for Temporary Events” will reduce duplication by having one set of uniform regulations covering markets and special food events across NSW,” the Minister said.

Developed after close consultation with local councils, the guidelines were today officially launched by Food Authority Director General George Davey.

“This NSW Food Authority venture in consultation with local councils is a good example of government agencies working together for the benefit of local communities,” Mr Davey said.

“Local events, such as regular farmers’ markets or annual food and wine festivals, are increasingly growing in popularity throughout NSW.

“They are a great way of attracting people to a region or special event and these new guidelines will be distributed through councils when someone applies to set up a stall at a temporary event.”

Minister Macdonald said the guidelines address food safety issues, including hygiene, disposal of waste, food handling, and include a checklist so vendors are aware of everything they need to do to comply with safe food laws.

“This single set of guidelines should also ensure greater consistency for council environmental health officers,” Mr Macdonald said.

“Many food industry sectors, from farm to retail level, will find the guidelines invaluable for maintaining high standards of food safety.”

Food stall vendors who want further information about the new guidelines should contact the Authority’s consumer & industry hotline on 1300 552 406.
