New food laws

On 1 January 2008 the Food Amendment Act 2007 will become law.

These changes to the Food Act 2003 will for example:

clarify the responsibilities of local government in relation to food regulation
improve food safety coordination between councils and the Food Authority in several areas, including food inspections
enable quicker responses to food emergencies and food recalls, as well as
establish a food regulation forum.

Funding to implement the new arrangements is $6.5 million over five years.

The amendments were passed by NSW parliament on 23 October 2007.
