New food laws

On 1 January 2008 the Food Amendment Act 2007 will become law.

These changes to the Food Act 2003 will for example:

  • clarify the responsibilities of local government in relation to food regulation
  • improve food safety coordination between councils and the Food Authority in several areas, including food inspections
  • enable quicker responses to food emergencies and food recalls, as well as
  • establish a food regulation forum.

Funding to implement the new arrangements is $6.5 million over five years.

The amended legislation is available for download at www.legislation.nsw.gov.au.

The amendments were passed by NSW parliament on 23 October 2007.
