Allergy Aware
Allergy Aware is a new pilot project aimed at making eating out safer for people with food allergies.
It trains people preparing and serving food - such as cooks and waiters – in areas such as how:
- foods that might cause allergic reactions are labelled
- to best to run a kitchen that caters for people with common food allergies, and
- to assist people with allergies to order from the menu.
Allergy Aware, the first project of its kind in New South Wales, is currently being trialled in the City of Canada Bay and Orange City council areas.
More than 160,000 people in NSW have a food allergy with the eight most common allergens: eggs, fish, milk, peanuts, sesame, shellfish, soy and tree nuts such as almonds, cashews and walnuts, accounting for 90% of reactions.
Allergy Aware has the support of Anaphylaxis Australia and industry bodies such as Restaurant & Catering NSW/ACT.
This joint project between the NSW Food Authority, the Food Regulation Partnership, Orange and Canada Bay councils was launched by NSW primary industries minister Ian Macdonald on 3 December 2007.
