Mercury in fish campaign

A healthy fish message for women planning pregnancy and mums to be...

Knowing what to eat can be challenging when you’re pregnant, a mum to be or breastfeeding. Women are told they should consume more good things like Omega-3, because Omega-3 is important for the development of the central nervous system in babies, before and after they are born.

Fish are high in Omega-3, yet some fish also contain mercury. It’s no wonder many women are confused!

To help clear up the misunderstanding, the NSW Food Authority launched a major public education campaign informing women how they can maximise the healthy benefits of fish, while reducing the risk from mercury.

The campaign is being supported by a range of government; consumer and medical advocacy groups.

They have joined the Food Authority to produce a simple, easy to follow diet card that allows you to enjoy all the good things from fish without the risk.

Following this advice will help clear up the misunderstanding, and give your baby and children a healthy start to life!
