Proposed food handler training initiative
The Authority is working closely with the hospitality industry to develop a mandatory food handler training initiative to help safeguard NSW consumers from foodborne illness.
The proposed initiative will require certain food businesses in the hospitality and retail food service sector to have at least one trained Food Safety Supervisor (FSS).
Businesses include: restaurants, cafes, take-away shops, caterers, bakeries, pubs, clubs, hotels and supermarket hot food sales.
Training requirements will be linked to nationally recognised units of competency within the Vocational Education and Training (VET) system.
Proposed training requirements:
| Food business | National competency code | Competency title |
|---|---|---|
| Hospitality and retail food service | SITXOHS002A | Follow workplace hygiene procedures |
| SITXFSA001A | Implement food safety procedures | |
| or | ||
| SIRRFSA001A | Apply retail food safety practices | |
It is anticipated that the new requirements will begin in April 2010, and that businesses will have until April 2011 to comply.
This is to give businesses time to undertake Food Safety Supervisor training.
The Authority will continue to consult with key stakeholders during the implementation phase.
Updates will be posted here as they become available.
