Environmental Health Officers (EHOs) from across the state gathered in Sydney 7-8 April 2025 for the NSW Food Authority’s Food Regulation Partnership (FRP) Workshop.

Themed ‘Outside the square – plating up new perspectives’, the 2-day workshop served as a valuable professional development opportunity for EHOs who conduct food regulatory inspections and investigations.

The Food Authority’s acting CEO Andrew Davies gave the keynote address, which focussed on key policy and regulation strategies to reduce foodborne illness.

Delegates then enjoyed presentations and workshops on topics that included the national regulatory landscape, food labelling, and the benefits of collaboration on cross-boundary issues.

A highlight of the event was the FRP Champion Awards, which celebrate outstanding service, achievements and impact in food safety:

  • MidCoast Council’s Environmental Health and Food Safety team won the Group – Country award.
  • City of Canterbury Bankstown’s Environmental Health (Public Health) team picked up the Group – City award.
  • The Individual – Country award went to City of Newcastle Senior Environmental Health Officer Sarie Wheatland.
  • Strathfield Council’s acting coordinator of Environmental Services Erin Hogan won the Individual – City award.

Topics covered on day 2 of the event included managing high risk foods such as acai, pesticide residue, Waverly Council’s Sushi Project, the role of the EHO on a cruise ship, and the use of artificial intelligence in food safety.

The formal workshop program was complemented by social activities that included a workshop dinner themed “Dinner Detective”.

The next FRP Workshop will be held in 2027.
