The Food Regulation Standing Committee, the committee responsible for coordinating food policy in Australia and New Zealand, is seeking feedback about what information should be provided for online retail sales of prepackaged food.

The committee has drafted a policy guideline, which would inform any future work on the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code.

The committee wants to know whether development of a policy guideline is supported, and feedback on the draft itself.

There is currently no guidance or requirements in the Code on what information must be provided to consumers when food is sold online.

In its specific policy principles, the guideline proposes that online platforms selling food should publish the same food safety, nutrition, and informed choice information that is required on food labels, except for variable information, such as date marks and lot identification.

Including Health Star Rating information when present, and a statement urging consumers to check physical food labels before consumption, are also among the principles.

The committee is seeking views through an online survey. Respondents are urged to read the accompanying documentation to fully understand what is being proposed and why before completing the survey.

Consultation closes 12 December 2025.
